2008 – the year of Ayumi Hamasaki ?- NOT !!!
Posted by redracer on December 30, 2008
To paraphrase a quote from another ‘Queen’ – 2008 was Ayumi Hamasaki’s ‘annus horribilis’ !!!
- On the first January, her 10th album ‘Guilty’ was released, and was her lowest selling album of all time and her first album not to reach the No.1 chart position.
- Later in January, she revealed that she had gone deaf in her left ear as a result of nearly 10 years of constant performing.
- During the year, she only released 2 singles and ANOTHER greatest hits CD collection (which out-sold her ‘Guilty’ album) and a banal set of disco remixes. The two singles ‘Mirrorcle World’ (not my mis-spelling!!) & ‘Days/Green’ both had lower than usual sales compared to previous releases.
- To cap off the year, on December 27 she announced that she had fallen down the stairs in her apartment and injured her right hand, which will probably force her to cancel her appearance as the opening act at this year’s New Years Eve singing competition. She had to cancel a live performance at TV Asahi’s “Music Station Super Live 2008” on the night before, and the fall was said to be caused by anemia exacerbated by fatigue.
Compare all of this to Kumi Koda’s year – her ”Kingdom’ album reached No.1 and out-sold ‘Guilty’, and she released 4 singles. I think it is obvious who is the current Japanese ‘Queen of Pop’, and who will remain so for a long time 🙂
