2007 J-Pop awards

Posted by redracer on January 6, 2008

Here are MY awards in a number of different categories for 2007, many of which will never be seen in any mainstream awards list.

2007 for me again included the introduction to a number of new artists, and not all of them were the latest ‘sensations’ !!! I discovered a number of ‘veterans’ who could still show some of today’s up-and-coming singers a thing or two (Misato Watanabe, Miki Imai & Akina Nakamori) … lets see if some of today’s ‘big stars’ are still around in 20 years time🙂

Please note of course that I have not heard every release from every artist of 2007, so there may be omissions that may appear glaring to some fans of other artists. If this is the case, please enlighten me, and any other comments/disagreements etc will be also be welcomed. Also some of these items may not have been released in 2007, but it was in 2007 that I first heard them😆

So, in no particular order, the winners for 2007 are ……..

and a moments silence please …

  • Saddest Event – death of ZARD

So as you can see, Mika Nakashima scoops the pool with best album, single & my favourite performer – 2007 was a big year for her, with the ‘Yes’ album & 4 singles. MISIA is still a fabulous singer, but did not release anything outstanding during 2007, other than her fabulous spectacular live shows.

Mika is a bit of an enigma, because she doesn’t dance or even have have dancers at her concerts like everyone else, and even in her video clips you never see her smile, and often she is not even singing. Her voice is not really strong, and she doesn’t have a wide range, but it is so enchanting & wistful sometimes, and just suits the fabulous songs written for her so well !!! Her latest album shows her handling a wide variety of styles with ease, and I am just glad she has put behind her the rock-chick “NANA” phase🙄 (but I wish I could get to see her in the 2 movies). And I just love her new ‘fringe’ hairstyle.

** changed 15/01/08 *** Oricon reports that for the 2nd year in a row, Kumi Kodawas the top seller of the year, with over 7.3 billion yen of sales profit (down on over 12.7 billion in 2006 !!), compared to Ayu’s 7.o billion yen. Based on the actual count of albums and singles sold, Ayumi Hamasaki just edged out Kumi Koda, with total sales of singles & albums of 1,859,857 to 1,852,107. She could obviously see the benefit of releasing several ‘greatest hits’ albums, like Kuu did in 2006. Most other winners and top place holders were boy-bands

Other achievers were …

Ai Otsuka was the only other individual (and female) in the top 10 sales ranking, at #6. Hikaru Utada had the #2 single with ‘Flavor Of Life’ (and #20 with ‘Beautiful World/Kiss & Cry’), and Kumi Koda’s ‘Freaky’ was #29 & ‘Ai no Uta’ was #62. Ayumi’s highest seller was ‘glitter/fated’ at #39, with ‘talkin 2 myself’ at #79.

Kumi had the #2 album with ‘Black Cherry’ (as well as #35 for ‘BEST-BOUNCE & LOVERS’) and Ayumi had #5 & #7 for the ‘A BEST 2-WHITE’ & ‘A BEST 2-BLACK’ compliations respectively. Ai Otsuka got #6 for her ‘Ai am BEST’ compilation.

Poll winner Mika Nakashima achieved album #34 for ‘YES’ (and #65 for ‘NANA – the END’), and #57 for the single ‘LIFE’.

You really do love Mika dontcha? Lol. I haven’t gotten round to listening to her latest album, but since you seem to have so much praise for it, I just might now. I still miss her NANA rocker phase though…:(

Sigh. And now with the recent news about Ayu gone deaf in the left ear, I think other singers like Koda Kumi are gonna take advantage of that.;_; Still, her new album Kingdom doesn’t look too bad.
