AFL finals – week 2 results & week 3 preview

This weekend had two quite unexpected results !!!
- SF2 – Collingwood beat West Coast by 19 points – 13.15 – 10.14 (10.12 each at full time)
- SF1 – Kangaroos beat Hawthorn by 33 points – 14.9 – 8.12
Firstly, after the huge 106 point thrashing at the paws of Geelong last week, the Kangaroos did not enter this game at very high odds. However they completely turned things around and outplayed the Hawks in most areas of the field. They did however get a number of controversial free kicks in front of goal, but I don’t think those scores would not have made the results much different. However they now have to travel to Adelaide to play for a place in the Grand Final against either Geelong or Collingwood.
Collingwood won a thrilling heart-stopper again the West Coast Eagles in Perth, after the scores were deadlocked at full time. This is the second time these teams have drawn a final – the first time was in 1990 after which the Magpies went on the win the replay and eventually the premiership. However the rules have changes since then, and now extra time must be played to get a result – 2 ‘halves’ of 5 minutes each. After a slow start on a rain-affected ground, the Pies were 7 points ahead at 1/2 time, and the Eagles were 4 points ahead at both 1/2 & 3/4 times. However during the 3rd quarter, the Eagles kicked the first 3 goals to be 22 point ahead, before the pies go their act together and kicked 3 goals of their own, 2 to Anthony Rocca. During the last quarter, it was goal for goal, and a couple of extra points from ‘posters’ meant that the scores were level at full time. The first half of extra time saw Collingwood kick the only goal, and then in the second half another 2 nearly right on the siren, so that the size of the win was not indicative of how close the match was. Collingwood kicked 9 of the last 11 goals to win one of the best games anyone has every seen !!!
Collingwood have now beaten and eliminated both of last year’s Grand Finalists, so their chances of beating Geelong next week are looking better and better 🙂
Eliminated from the competition now are another interstate team, West Coast, as well as Hawthorn. The 4 teams left now play for a place in the Grand Final, and once again, any losers are eliminated.
- Preliminary Final 1 – winner to play winner of PF2 in Grand Final, loser eliminated
- Preliminary Final 2 – winner to play winner of PF1 in Grand Final, loser eliminated
Week 3 next week will be the following …
- PF1 – Geelong vs Collingwood – Friday night at the MCG
- PF2 – Port Adelaide vs Kangaroos – Saturday afternoon at AAMI Stadium
CARN THE PIES !!!!
