AFL finals – week 1 preview

Posted by redracer on September 7, 2007

Now the home & away season has finally ended, Geelong are the minor premiers, and it is time for the finals season to start …

The ladder at the end of round 22 was …

  1. Geelong Cats
  2. Port Adelaide Power
  3. West Coast Eagles
  4. Kangaroos
  5. Hawthorn Hawks
  6. Collingwood Magpies
  7. Sydney Swans
  8. Adelaide Crows
  9. St.Kilda Saints
  10. Brisbane Lions
  11. Fremantle Dockers
  12. Essendon Bombers
  13. Western Bulldogs
  14. Melbourne Demons
  15. Carlton Blues
  16. Richmond Tigers

Geelong were the surprise packet this year, as they came 5th in 2005 and 4th in 2004, and have not won a premiership since 1963. Their last grand finals appearances were the successive losses of 1992/1994/1995. The grand finalists of the last two years, West Coast and Sydney, would next not be expected to play each other again, as Sydney only managed to finish 7th. Adelaide just squeezed into the final 8 by defeating Collingwood in the last round, and this meant St.Kilda missed out on a spot. Not counting Sydney, there are 3 other interstate teams in the finals this year, but it is good to see Brisbane missed out🙂

Hawthorn and the Kangaroos were not expected by many to finish this highly this season, so it is good to see some different teams for a change. Hawthorn’s last premiership was in 1991, and their last finals appearance (3rd) was in 2001. The Kangaroos’s last premiership (as North Melbourne) was in 1999, and since then they have come 7th in 2005, 8th in 2002 and 4th in 2000. Some of the once mightly Melbourne teams that dominated the competition a few years back all finished in the bottom 5😆

The way the final series works is that the following teams play each other in the first week, and the higher placed teams get to have the game at their home ground …

  • Qualifying Final 1 – 1st vs 4th  – winner to get a weeks rest, and loser to play the next week in Semi Final 1
  • Qualifying Final 2 – 2nd vs 3rd – winner to get a weeks rest, and loser to play the next week in Semi Final 2
  • Elimination Final 1 – 5th vs 8th – winner to play next week in Semi Final 1, loser is eliminated
  • Elimination Final 2 – 6th vs 7th – winner to play next week in Semi Final 2, loser is eliminated

So the scenario for finals week 1 is as follows …

  • QF1 – Geelong vs Kangaroos – Sunday afternooon at the MCG
  • QF2 – Port Adelaide vs West Coast – Friday night at AAMI Stadium
  • EF1 – Hawthorn vs Adelaide – Saturday afternoon at Telstra Dome
  • EF2 – Collingwood vs Sydney – Saturday night at the MCG

As coincidence would have it, the two teams I follow both reached the finals and were drawn to play each other in an elimination match the first week🙄
