AFL mid-year coach merry-go-round (part 2)

Posted by redracer on July 26, 2007

Well it looks like I spoke too soon – 2 days later and another change was just announced !!!

Last night it was reported that Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy will not be coaching the Bombers next year. Some sources say that this was a secret deal decided at the beginning of the years, and others say it was decided just this week to sack him. I can’t see how you can be sacked and still continue coaching for another 8 weeks🙄

Anyway, this ends a very illustrious stint at Essendon for ‘Sheeds’ – he has achieved the following statistics …

  • 27 years continuous coaching at the same club (1981-2007) – however Collingwood’s Jock McHale still holds the record of 38 years (1913-1950)
  • 19 finals & 4 premierships (1984, 1985, 1993, 2000)
  • most games coached (629 – previous highest record was Collingwood’s Jock McHale)

Rumours are that he would still like to continue coaching for a number of years, and there is a possibility that he may be interested in returning in some capacity next year to Richmond, the team he played 251 games for between 1967-1979, with premierships in 1969, 1973 & 1974.
