Ayumi (浜崎あゆみ) vs. Kumi (倖田來未) pt.3

More news about what Ayumi is doing about the dominance of Kumi over her …

It seems that Ayumi is trying to make up for the loss of her market in Japan to Kumi, by doing more appearances overseas. She is very big in other parts of South-east Asia, and did a tour of Hong Kong, Taipei & Shanghai in March & April this year. Recently she also flew to Hong Kong for 8 days to film the video for her new single ‘Glitter’, and it included Hong Kong heart-throb Shawn Yue as her co-star, marking her first collaboration with a Chinese actor.

The marketing director of Warner Music Singapore, her distributor in that region, said that when Japanese artists have reached saturation point in their own country, they will need new ventures and markets by expanding their horizons to other countries. He admitted that Ayumi probably feels ‘threatened’ by Kumi’s outstanding performance last year, even though they both belong to the same record label, Avex Trax, where Ayumi has reigned as queen for years before Kumi came along and nearly usurped her throne.

Even though the visit was ‘unofficial’, news of it quicky spread and whilst she did no interviews and was kept away from gathering crowds by her massive entourage of black-clad personal bodyguards, she still won reporters over with her gracious, friendly ways, and waved to the army of photographers who were constantly crowding around the film set. She also took the initiative to walk towards and sign autographs for the 30 fans who reportedly chased her around town to catch an extra glimpse of their favourite J-pop star, and were waiting for her outside her hotel each day.
