Cricket World Cup final

Well after several long months that really seems to have dragged on too long, we are down to the final.
Tomorrow night (AEDT) Australia play Sri Lanka to hopefully win their third trophy in a row – if it wasn’t for them beating us in the 1996 World Cup final, it would be Australia’s 4th 😦
Sri Lanka earned the right to play in the final by beating New Zealand by 81 runs. They managed to reach 289 and bowled the Kiwis out for 208 in 41.4 overs. New Zealand looked all done for at 9-149, but Patel & Franklin managed another 64 runs between them. For Sri Lanka, Muralitharan was excellent with 4-31 in 8 overs, and Jayawardene the best batsman reaching 115 not out – hitting 10 fours and 3 sixes !!!
Australia gave South Africa a thrashing, beating them by 7 wickets with 111 balls remaining and finishing the game in just 31.3 overs. At one stage the Proteas were 5-27 and it’s a shame Australia did not finish them off quickly and let them get 149 in 43.5 overs, with Kemp unbeaten on 49. Once again Gilchrist was straight out nearly first over, and he needs to settle down and get a big score in the final. McGrath is winding up to have a fabulous last game, with 3-18 off 8 overs, and Tait was also excellent with 4-39 🙂
Obviously Sri Lanka will play all their good bowlers this time, unlike the last farcical meeting between the two clubs, so it should be an interesting game. Even though Australia must be the favourites, they should not take Sri Lanka lightly.
