Ayumi (浜崎あゆみ) vs. Kumi (倖田來未)

Posted by redracer on January 2, 2007

After all the pre-Xmas releases, it seems the Japanese music industry is now gearing up for a release frenzy in February. Just out is the news of a second ‘Greatest Hits’ collection from Ayumi Hamasaki. In 2001 her first, called ‘A Best’, sold over 4.5 million copies. This release is called ‘A Best 2’ (of course !!), and is going to made up of no less than 4 different versions …

  1. AVCD-23263 – CD + 2 DVD’s (black)
  2. AVCD-23264 – CD (black)
  3. AVCD-23265 – CD + 2 DVD’s (white)
  4. AVCD-23266 – CD (white)

The ‘white’ album will contain happy, up-tempo type songs, and the ‘black’ one will have slower ballad type songs. The versions with the 2 DVD’s will contain …

  1. PV’s of all the songs on the album (PV = Personal Video – the Japanese name for a ‘music video’).
  2. Footage from the “ayumi hamasaki BEST of COUNTDOWN LIVE 2006-2007 A” live show on the 30/31st December 2006 in Tokyo. Content will be different with each version.

Each version will have a different cover, and I guess some adoring fans will have to buy all 4 of them🙄 A bonus pre-press release will also be included with the DVD versions.

This comes right on the heels of her last new studio album ‘Secret’, which was only released on November 29, and the 3 disc mega-release ‘Arena Tour 2006’on November 2001. It seems she is trying to catch up to her old rival Kumi Koda, who would now have to be the undisputed queen of J-Pop for 2006, following her amazing run of sales and releases from September 2005 …

For many years, Ayumi was the undisputed queen of J-Pop, but it seems not so now – Kumi was the year’s highest earner with a total of 12,702.2 million Yen profit (whilst Ayumi only made 6,892.7 million Yen) … whilst Ayumi’s overall total sales are still 6 times higher than Kumi’s, it is the last year that everyone remembers😀

Fortunately, even thought they are supposedly rivals, they are both represented by the SAME record company (the RhythmZone division of AvexTrax) – so how much money are THEY making ??
