Tragic accidental death of ZARD

Posted by redracer on May 29, 2007

I was shocked last night to hear of the premature death of J-Pop singer ZARD ….

ZARD is really the name of a group, but since around their third album, it has become the namesake of the group’s leader and singer Sachiko Kamachi. She also went by the stage name Izumi Sakai. Whilst not a well-known name these days with all the newcomers flooding the market, ZARD has been around since 1991, and is a stalwart of the Japanese music industry, with over 40 singles, and nearly 20 albums under her belt.  She was born in Kyushu on February 6th, 1967 and originally did modelling work before moving into music. The group’s first release ‘Good-bye My Loneliness’ reached #9, and the first #1 single was the 6th release in 1993, ‘Makenai de’, which sold 1.5 million copies.  Since then, most single releases were top 3 achievers. The same applies to albums released after the 4th album ‘Yureru Omoi’.  The second album ‘Mo Sagasanai ‘ sold around 3.2 million copies.

A greatest hits package ‘Golden Best – 15th Anniversary’ (with DVD’s) released just last year, in 3 versions, was also a number #1 seller. She had 11 singles and 9 albums reach the #1 spot on the Oricon Album Charts, and during the 1990’s based on record sales was the #1 female singer in Japan, and the 3rd best overall. She did not do many personal appearances or TV shows, and her first concert tour was held in 2004 (13 years after her debut), and 10 dates sold out instantly.

In June 2006, she was diagnosed with cervical cancer, and the operation was a success. However in April this year it was found to have spread to her lungs and treatment was underway, and looking like being successful again. In fact she was in the planning stage for a new album, the first new release for two years, and also a live tour, the first for 3 years. However on the evening of the 26th, whilst taking a walk within the Keio Hospital in Shinjuku where she was being treated, she fell 3m down some steps that were slippery because of rain, and hit the back of her head. She was not found until the next morning, and later that day died from cerebral contusion.

And I actually do have a few questions for you if it’s allright. Is it simply me or does it seem like a few of the responses appear like written by brain dead people? :-P And, if you are writing at additional social sites, I’d like to follow anything new you have to post.

Yes, I had tears in my eyes while I was researching & writing the post, and I am not a BIG fan (only 3 CD’s). How do you think this person felt ? – they had every album & single, as well as DVD’s & photo books – must be a record for someone outside Japan …

I was very saddened by this news. I am such a huge fan of ZARD and Izumi and I just couldn’t believe that she would be gone so soon. She truly had one of the greatest voices in the J-pop industry and she won’t be forgotten. RIP Izumi-san.
